Ginter was born on January 19, 1994, in Freiburg, Germany.

He started his youth career with SC Freiburg before moving to the youth academy of Borussia Dortmund in 2011.

Ginter made his professional debut for SC Freiburg in 2012 and then moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2014, where he won the DFB-Pokal in his first season with the club.

He has been a regular member of the Borussia Mönchengladbach squad since the 2017-18 season and has made over 100 appearances for the club in all competitions.
